The Cheapest Car in History

Expected to be revealed next week is the world's first, $2,500 new car, the Tata. Brainchild of Indian entrepreneur Ratan Tata, the car is rumoured to be little more than a 4-wheel, enclosed motorbike. The key market for the vehicle is expected to be the burgeoning developing world countries - India, China and Brazil.
Ratan Tata made headlines last week when Ford revealed he was the favoured bidder to acquire Land Rover and Jaguar from the troubled US automaker.

Tata's "Indica" is already being imported to Europe. Slightly larger than this new model, the 3 cylinder Indica also comes in diesel and is actually the number one import car in Greece right now.

India's auto industry has been around since the 1800s, and has gone through a renaissance in the past decade. Mercedes actually has manufacturing plants there. It's quite easy to have vehicle production in a country that has the world's largest number of engineers, AND a huge labor base.

It's the range that I find breathtaking. From the world's cheapest all the way up to Jaguar and Land Rover?

This doesn't surprise me...Tata is huge in India and is a long time maker of trucks, auto-rickshaws and these little auto-rickshaw delivery trucks, with a little flatbed on the back. And yes, they really are nothing more than a '4 wheeled enclosed motorbike'. But it works.

Also, Tata makes steel, tea, houses and runs a series of restaurants. No joke...

If it can be winterized like a Smart Car, it could probably sell well here too.
